Today has been a GREAT day! Not only is it my birthday (which has come with lots of spoiling and snuggles from my crew), but it’s also the kick off of this spring’s One Room Challenge. Last fall, I joined the ORC for the first time after following along and admiring others’ wonderful room transformations for years. It marked the start of my adventures in blogging here at Heirloom & Ivy and was such a fun, energizing, and rewarding experience. I’m looking forward to taking on another space this time around, and connecting with more design lovers like myself.
This year, I was torn between redesigning three rooms in our house: the guest room, the sunroom, and my youngest’s bedroom. After watching big sister get a room refresh earlier this year, it wasn’t long before I started regularly hearing questions like “mommy paint my room soon too, pwease?!” from my two-year-old. Can’t argue with that sweet little voice – the decision was made.
Mommy has a whole lot more than painting up her sleeve for this room transformation. Those of you who’ve been following along for awhile here know that I’m a HUGE fan of incorporating millwork into design plans – such a fun, inexpensive, and surprisingly simple way to add depth and detail. In the past year, my husband and I have done DIY board and batten in the playroom and my eldest’s room and while we LOVE the look, we wanted to try something a bit different in this room to avoid being overly predictable and matchy-matchy. Enter: beadboard. We’ve used it in a few fun ways in other areas in our house (as the backing for our built-in shelves, in our entryway, in furniture) so repeating it in this space will help build cohesion throughout our home. I’m a huge beadboard fan and love the different vibes it can lend a space depending on how it’s done. Painted white, it has a coastal/cottagey feel. When done in a bolder color, it reads more modern. For my kiddo’s room, I’ve decided to go with Bruton White by Benjamin Moore for a polished, sophisticated feel. It’s a color we’ve used throughout our home which will help this space to flow and feel cohesive. I plan to have the beadboard cover about 2/3 of the wall from floor to ceiling which will help draw the eye up and make the ceilings appear taller, while adding a simple pine board for trim (possibly with a peg rail!) for a contemporary, updated look.
Above that? You guessed it: wallpaper! I have SO much fun using wallpaper in kids’ spaces (the peel and stick variety to be specific, a great idea for folks who are a bit nervous about committing to the traditional kind *cough* my husband *cough*). I’m going with my favorite peel and stick wallpaper company, Chasing Paper. I love finding ways to balance neutral, classic elements with pops of color and whimsy to create kids’ spaces that can truly grow with a child. For this space, the neutral beadboard will be offset with a gorgeous print (Botany by Kelly Ventura) that brings in tangerine and peach tones. Incorporating a dresser in a light, driftwood-inspired finished will elevate the space and add a touch of elegance and maturity without feeling too stuffy for a child’s room.
My goals for this week: get the beadboard and trim up, spackle and caulk, and get to painting! You can look forward to some progress shots as well as a sneak peek of some textiles and fabrics I hope to work into the space for added dimension and detail. So glad to have you here following along – don’t hesitate to drop me a line!
