Guess who forgot to hit the “publish” button on this post back in December? Yes, I’m aware that at this point we’re about a month past Christmas but in the interest of adopting a positive, glass-half-full approach in the New Year, let’s just pretend that I’m SUPER ahead of the game for Christmas 2021, okay? OKAY!
This year, I settled on a neutral palate for my holiday decor with plenty of metallics, creams, and fresh winter greens. It was my first year doing a live garland on the mantle and bannister (plus DIY swags throughout the house).
Downside: I’ll be cleaning up stray needles until next December (I pulled one out of my cereal bowl yesterday morning, true story). Upside: It was THE PRETTIEST! So fresh and festive and despite the mess, probably something I’ll do every year from now on (can you hear the muffled sobs of my husband from where you’re reading?).
This was also our first year doing two trees (because who didn’t need a little extra holiday cheer in 2020?) which meant double the decorating fun. It is admittedly harder to type that now that we’re deep in the process of cleaning up all of said decorations, but the end is in sight!
In the dining room, I added pops of rose gold and copper paired with matte black which had a beautiful, formal feel and lent all the fun, moody contrast to the space. Black tapered candles are officially my new obsession.
I went a bit softer in the living room, both in colors and in textures. The knit tree skirt and stockings with faux fur trim in various shades of cream paired with lots of throws and candlelight helped to achieve the more relaxed, cozy feel I was going for. Perfect for snowy evenings curled up with hot chocolate, cookies, and a good holiday movie.
For those of you who have been following along with me for awhile, you may have noticed that I swapped the brass-framed gallery wall (that will always have a special place in my heart!) for this simpler display of favorite family photos. I’m digging the crisper, more modern look with the thin black frames and bright white mats.
I mainly focused on our dining room and living room this year (because kids under 4 tend to lose interest in holiday decorating after hanging approximately 6.5 ornaments) but I had fun adding greens and small festive touches to a few other areas in the house to spread the holiday love.
I already have some ideas of what I’d like to do for next Christmas which is convenient because if this post was any later, it’d probably be time to decorate again. Wishing you all a happy and healthy New Year!

Grace, Everything looks crisp and clean. I really like the color scheme and your use of black is inspired.
