REVEAL DAY IS HERE! I’ll be honest, there were a few moments in the last week when I didn’t think the space would be ready for the big unveiling today. But a couple of late nights painting and a one room challenge miracle a la the window treatments (which arrived 6 weeks early!) got me back on track. So without further ado, I present to you my classic meets modern master bedroom reveal.
It’s finally complete and it has just the feel I was hoping for – elegant, storied, crisp, and clean (with a hint of moodiness, I’m looking at you you beautiful black built-ins!). I haven’t posted so much as a sneak peek of this particular angle because I love a good surprise (and because it was looking like a hot mess until about 24 hours ago). The new shaker-style cabinet doors on the built-ins, the updated hardware, the tricorn black paint, the light fixture, the headboard – it all came together just as I hoped it would and I couldn’t be happier with the end result!
In the beginning of the challenge when I decided to put our queen bed in the alcove, I had moments of doubt where I worried it would feel cramped and look overcrowded. Thankfully, it is anything but. Doing so has opened up the rest of the room beautifully and made this area a visually pleasing focal point.
From the bed, we have a lovely view of this weathered wood dresser and the show stopping mirror that I’ve admired for years. There’s so much detail and character in this room, so I wanted to keep the dresser decor simple and classic. Why even try to compete with that mirror, am I right?
I decided to hop on the ever-trendy olive tree train (paired with a lovely little Studio McGee vase) because 1.) it fit the aesthetic I was going for and 2.) my parents happened to have two in their basement that they didn’t want. Pretty and free – perhaps the best combo there is!
I’ve showed off the desk quite a bit in the weeks leading up to the reveal, but now you get to see how it looks in the context of the rest of the room. As I’ve mentioned, I needed something that could function as a workspace/vanity but that could also pass for another dresser when I want to clear the walkway to the bed so the secretary desk was once again (because yes, I own two and counting) the ultimate solution.
I brought in a modern look with the thin black frames and stark white matting for contrast juxtaposed with the beautiful (and affordable) vintage art from two of my favorite online print shops.
I kicked around quite a few ideas for what chair to pair with this desk ranging from the ultra modern to the ultra vintage but ultimately settled on this one because 1.) I love how the silhouette of the chair echoes the arched casing in the room and 2.) we already owned it (it’s an extra dining chair for when we have guests and extend our table). What did I say about the pretty and free combo?!
Directly across from the desk, we have my radiator turned window seat nook. For almost the entire challenge, this little area was my least favorite part of the room. I knew it had the potential to be great but even after my first attempt at decorating the shelves, it fell flat. Last week’s addition of a custom (and easy peasy) window seat cushion, throw pillows, and beadboard on the backs of the shelves were just the infusion of life and personality the area needed.
This may be my favorite area in the entire room now and it’s already become a frequented family spot for cozying up with a good book.
Overall, the last 6 weeks have been an unbelievably fun process for me and though I may stun a few people out there with this next statement, I’m actually going to miss working long into the evenings on this space (and tracking the progress of all the talented ORC participants out there).
More than any other home decor project I’ve taken on before, this master bedroom makeover has reiterated for me how much I truly love and appreciate interior design as well as the power a space can pack. It’s been such a privilege creating an environment that reflects my personal style and instills such a sense of calm and peace.
This is the part where my husband usually goes “so you’re done now! You can relax!” And I look at him with that “when will you get it that I’m NEVER done” expression. And he course corrects and responds in a half-bemused and half-exasperated tone “so what’s next dear?”. So stay tuned friends, and thank you so much for your interest (source list below!) and your support in this transformation.
Until next time, thanks for stopping by,

Thank you, Tim! I really appreciate the kind words 🙂 We’re so happy we gave ourselves some extra storage by the bed (and blocked the AC ductwork – win win!).
