Week two of the ORC is here and it’s time to move past the planning phase and get this space transformation underway! Mission one: putting the beadboard up on the walls. I love a project that’s simple, inexpensive, and high impact and this just so happened to be all three. Thanks to a little birthday gift card I had to Home Depot (my family gets me.) I was able to score all the materials for under $100 out of pocket. Home Depot carries large panels of primed beadboard ready for painting that are super easy to work with. Hot tip: head to the store with measurements in hand (check ’em twice!) and the kind folks at Home Depot will do your cutting for you at no additional cost.
Our 1930 tudor revival home has many wonderful things to love about it but 10 foot ceilings is not one of them (calling them 8 feet may even be a tad generous). To help draw the eye up and give the illusion of height, I opted to extend the beadboard up 3/4 of the wall. To top it off, I chose a simple pine board for the trim for a clean, modern look. Though it’s typical to see rounded decorative molding sitting atop of beadboard, it’s always fun to do the unexpected in interior design, right?! We were able to position the panels – secured with a generous helping of liquid and traditional nails – directly on top of our existing baseboard which simplified matters and kept costs down. Double win!
It took a full day and still needs to be caulked, spackled, and painted but the beadboard is fully up and I’m LOVING the looks of it so far! To add further detail and character to the space, I’ve chosen a beautiful peel and stick wallpaper, Botany, designed by Kelly Ventura from Chasing Paper. Of all the peel and stick wallpaper suppliers I’ve tried (and I’ve tried quite a few!), Chasing Paper is far and away my number one recommendation. The quality and the customer service cannot be beat. I often gravitate towards wallpaper that’s a bit more neutral (such as in our play room which you can check out below), but for this project, I felt drawn to adding something that would offer a pop of color to the space.
When I saw the perfectly simple, floral pattern in the ivory and tangerine colorway, I fell in love. It adds a touch of whimsy and playfulness to the space – perfect for a child’s room – yet isn’t overly bold which will help me not to tire of it quickly. I tend to incorporate color in subtle, polished ways throughout my home but have yet to do a room with orange tones – which could easily become overpowering – so I’m excited for the design challenge in this space!
Next week’s goals – paint the beadboard, finalize the furniture orders, and start thinking about some fun textiles/fabrics to incorporate into the space. Be sure to follow along on instagram for updates throughout the week and to cast your vote for some upcoming design decisions!
Thanks for stopping by,
